Latinista Editor In Chief, Dee Rivera shares her top tips in choosing the best swimsuit for your body type this Summer!
Pear-shape, hourglass, inverted trapezoid — we can’t even keep track of the ways Latinistas and women are categorizing womens’ bodies. It’s confusing, when you’re looking for the perfect swimsuit this season and feel like “Ugh I can’t wear this bottom because I’m apple-shaped! I can’t wear this top because my chest is too big/too small or too long.”
Here is my guide and advice for swimsuit shopping for real women.
Small Chest: Finding a suit that flatters your bust can be hard. The best bet for a Latinista with a smaller chest is to go for a top with ruffles to give the illusion of a bustier chest. Also a suit with padding can help to give you a little somthin’ somethin’ extra.
Tori Praver Seafoam Flounce Halter Top Sweet Pea Pink, $23
HUGE Chest: For the Latinista with big girls, string bikinis are not the way to go ladies. Instead, cup sizes and underwire will offer you the support you need so your boobs won’t be all over the place when you take a dip. Another tip is look for thicker bathing suit straps and double-stitched bands for the most flattering results.
Broad Shoulders: If you want to keep from looking like a football player, there are a few things you can do to balance out your upper body. Go for a solid colored suit with printed panels along the side. This will help create the look of an hourglass figure and even out a boxy upper body. Also, an asymmetrical neckline helps give you an illusion of a smaller upper body.
Lisa Marie Fernandez One-Piece Arden Flounce Swimsuit, $430;
Flat Booty: Frills and ruching come in handy when you lack some meat on the bones as they give the illusion of a bigger behind. Go for bottoms in bright colors and loud prints. Also, showing a little cheek is preferable to full-coverage bottoms.
Big Butt: If you have a backside which most Latinistas do, string bikinis and high-cut swimsuits can often be uncomfortable and a bit too revealing. Unless you are dancing on a pole. Who wants a wedgie in the summer? So beyond avoiding Brazilian and other skimpy cut swimsuits, you should look for designs with solid bottoms and printed tops — which will help balance out your big booty.
Love Handles: We don’t have any love for our Love Handles. But fighting the bulge is easier than you think. You’d be surprised that a high-waisted bottom works wonders — just make sure it extends above your belly button to prevent a muffin top.
Short Legs: Latinistas can be petite sometimes. If you want to elongate shorter legs, go for suits with high cuts in the leg (a la Jennifer Lopez). Since you are showing more skin, it will make your gams appear longer. And for the brave, go for a thong for optimal lengthening potential.
Cellulite: Whatever size you come in– cellulite doesn’t discriminate. And trying to cover it with those tiny skirted suits is not going to work. Look for swimdresses and tankinis with longer hemlines, but that still pack plenty of sass.
I hope this guide helps with all the drama that goes with finding the perfect swimsuit and helps you embrace all the beautiful imperfections that make you, you!
Enjoy your Summer
Your wedding is fast approaching and aside from planning the grand event, don’t forget to include self-care. It’s easy to get caught up in the big details and end up pushing yourself to your breaking point. I reached out to fitness expert Aubrey Hunt who is based out of New Jersey. Aubrey who is known as “The Bride Trainer”, has experience training non-bride clients as well. Here she gives us ideas on what you can do to get yourself into shape for your wedding and beyond.
CR: Hello Aubrey. Can you please tell us a little bit about yourself? Why did you decide to become a trainer and how long have you been a trainer?
AH: I have been a competitive athlete my entire life and played Division 1 sports, so fitness and being active has always been a big part of my life. It has never felt like a chore or something I had to do; it was more of a stress-relief and a challenging but fun environment to be in. I started using a personal trainer when I was only 14 years old, because I wanted to become strong for my dream of playing college athletics. Craig was my first trainer and he was funny, smart, and very passionate about what he was doing. Upon graduating college in 2015 with my Bachelors’ Degree in Motivational Psychology, I was thinking to myself, “What am I going to do with my life?” A few weeks after moving back home, Craig and I reconnected because he had transferred to one of the most well-known gyms in the country, Equinox. He told me to come visit him in NYC for the day at Equinox– little did I know that, that was my interview! The next day I got a call asking to be a personal trainer there. And that was the beginning!
CR: That’s quite the goal and what a great start! What made you focus on brides which made you earn the name “The Bride Trainer”?
AH: After my time at Equinox, I wanted to begin my own business. I wanted freedom to create my own schedule, select my own clientele, and charge my own prices. I wanted to work for myself. I come from a very creative family, so when brainstorming with my mom and dad about what I should call myself, the Bride Trainer came to light. My mother has been a bridal designer for 20 years, and we all thought it would be an interesting demographic to target. I did some research and was surprised that, that name was not already taken! Growing up around my mom and watching her design passionately for her brides, I got a lot of experience in the wedding industry and learned what brides want and don’t want for their big day. I love the challenge of having a deadline and not only helping brides to fit in their dress, but also building confidence and self-esteem so that they feel beautiful in their skin every day and not just on their wedding day.
CR: How very cool that you were able to blend what you do with what your mother does in a way that works. Do routines vary for clients who aren’t brides to be?
AH: The way I train my clients varies based on the individual, bride or not bride. I have trained military, candidates for the police academy, new moms, cancer survivors, young athletes, senior citizens and more. The programs I design are specific to each client and what goals they are looking to accomplish.
CR: Is there a nutrition program to go along with your training program? If so, what kinds of foods does that include? Sample menu?
AH: I do counsel my clients in nutrition and provide macronutrient guides that they can use to enhance their results. Nutrition is the most important aspect of reaching any fitness goal– whether you want to lose 200lbs, 15lbs, bulk and gain tons of muscle, or shred and do a fitness competition. Nutrition is so important, and a lot of people overlook it. They think, “I can just do cardio to burn this off” or “I’ll go to the gym extra this week.” You will never be able to out-train a bad diet. So, if your nutrition is not under control, you will not get the results you dream of. In the consultation process, I take my clients through a very in-depth questionnaire, and that includes asking them which foods they like and dislike and are allergic to. I cater to meat lovers, vegans, vegetarians, and pescetarians.
CR: You’re available online as well. Can you please explain how that would work for a bride who maybe isn’t in New Jersey and still wants to hire you to train them?
AH: There are several benefits to online training. When you train in person, the client is tied to a schedule and is forced to work out when I have them booked, not necessarily when it fits their life. The client pays on average 33% more. When training via satellite I, the trainer, can afford the time to oversee the client’s diet, the single most important thing in the entirety of fat loss and muscle gain. It is safe to say working out without detailed instructions on how to eat is pointless. You don’t have the pay fees to a gym and feed the pockets of the higher ups. The client pays more on average for maintenance of the gym/administrative employees than they do for their training. In short, online training is exponentially less cost to the client. I, the trainer, can afford the energy and attention to each client as I’m not on my feet 15 hours per day as I am in personal training. The result: way less money for the client, better results, less pressure to adhere to a strict schedule, taking care of food-the single most important part of training, and more personal care.
Online Training has been most successful for the self-motivated individual and mainly for people who live out of state, but I have several clients who aren’t as self-motivated and need the extra accountability and it works very well for them, too. The consultation process is free and done via phone call or facetime, where we get to know each other, and you tell me about your goals and fitness history. Following our consultation, I design your program. Workouts are sent weekly (every Sunday night) with videos for each exercise. If you need additional explanation on how to perform an exercise, I would be happy to do that. I design a meal plan for you that you would follow. The meal plan is created using macronutrient partitioning and it is designed specifically for YOUR body- no cookie cutter plans here. We have mandatory weekly check-ins, where you send me your weight once per week (we decide on a day together, Saturday for instance). You wake up, send me your weight after bathroom but before you eat or drink anything. Then you would send me progress photos so I can track your progress as I wouldn’t be seeing your body in person. These photos are 100% confidential and for my eyes only. Based on your weekly progress, I make the necessary changes to your program. I also provide 24/7 access to you, I help you with travel as far as planning meals and workouts that require no equipment, assist decision making when going to restaurants on what to order, and am available to you for questions, coaching, and motivation.
In addition to online training, I provide live sessions– where we train via Facetime, more for accountability purposes, and using the program I have designed for you. This is usually used by people out of state, but anyone can do these. We would schedule our “session” as we would in personal training, for instance Thursday 5:30 pm for 45 minutes. We would facetime, whether it be you in your gym or home or wherever you train, and I would train you via facetime the same way I would train you in person- only I am not physically there.
CR: Sounds like you’ve thought of everything to make the steps towards working with you very easy to make. What can a bride expect from you when she signs up? Walk me through a training session.
AH: During the first session, I always like to get the bride/client comfortable. Fitness is a very personal journey and oftentimes, requires people to be vulnerable and pushed outside of their comfort zone. I like to blast the kind of music they like that gets them pumped up and ready to workout. I never expect any client to know anything when they walk through the door. I teach them each movement as if this is their first time doing it. This first session is a learning day for me, as I assess how the client moves and where his/her strengths and weaknesses are. I do not want to build strength on top of dysfunction, so when there are issues with functional movement, I do my best to correct them first (for instance, if squatting incorrectly, identify the issue and fix before adding weight to the movement). If any exercises ever cause extreme discomfort or pain due to injuries, I always stop the client immediately and refer them to a physical therapist or doctor to make sure the injury is cared for.
CR: How close to the wedding can a bride expect to see results? For example, if she put off contacting you and now there are only 3-6 months left for her big day.
AH: I have had brides reach out 2 years in advance, and I have had brides reach out 3 months in advance. There is never a timeline for results, as each client’s goals and journey will be different. But I do provide the necessary tools for every client to be successful and accomplish what they want. I always say, “I am your GPS to your destination. All you have to do is get in the car and drive.”
CR: I love that quote! How do you incorporate someone’s possible pre-existing condition into your workouts? Let’s say a client has a slipped disc. Do you cater the workout to work around that or do you shy away from working with someone with pre-existing conditions?
AH: I always ask in the initial questionnaire if clients have ever had or currently have any injuries or medical conditions. Not only can injuries cause pain, but they can impact how the body moves functionally. Each client must be cleared by his/her physician before starting an exercise program with me. In the past, I have had clients who want to work with me but have a pre-existing injury or medical condition ask their physical therapists specifically what they can do and what they should avoid, so that while in the process of healing they can continue to live a healthy lifestyle. I will never shy away from working with anyone, but I do want to make sure the client’s safety is put first, which is why I sometimes refer them to a physical therapist if their injury or condition is impacting how they move.
CR: That’s great to know that you will refer out if you feel that’s what’s best for your client. What is some advice that you would give to anyone looking to start an exercising routine?
AH: My advice would be, be patient and trust the process. Anyone who tells you this journey is easy, or you can get “guaranteed results” is lying to you. I do not believe in the latest fad diets or shortcuts. I am all about living a balanced, healthy and happy lifestyle, feeling good in your skin, and working hard to get what you want. So, it will get tough, but when it does, that’s when you know it is working, and that is when you need to keep going. Never get complacent and always keep striving for more.
CR: Where can our readers find you and how can they reach you?
AH: Feel free to check out my website www.thebridetrainer.com as well as my Instagram @thebridetrainer where I share my own journey with you and help motivate you to keep going when the going gets tough. Nothing in life is easy, and if it is, it probably isn’t worth having. I am here to push you, educate you, cheer you on, and get you to where you want to be. Thank you so much Aubrey for taking the time to answer some questions for us. I wish you continued success.
It’s the summer and let’s be real…who isn’t looking forward to bbq’s, cocktails and lazy days at the beach right? You worked so hard all winter to get yourself in tip top shape and now you might be wondering how you can stay on track with all the extra outings and traveling. Or you have decided that you need to be doing something but are having serious doubts about whether the summer is the best time to start.
The biggest thing I teach my clients is how to make your fitness a LIFESTYLE…not just something you do every now and then. When you are showing up consistently it becomes a habit that you will want to keep! So no matter what season or stage your life is in you will be able to stay committed. So how exactly will you do this during the summer? Here are my biggest tips for summer proofing your fitness routine.
1) Have a Plan
If you know you are going to be away take some time to research if your hotel has a gym or if your have enough space in your room to get in a quick workout. Check out the area you will be visiting to see if there is a park, path or a beach nearby that you can use.
2) Create a Schedule
Pick what days and times you will work out and SCHEDULE them on your calendar! This is a huge step in making it happen.
3) Determine Where To Exercise
Now that you have your schedule in place you might be wondering where you can do these workouts. If you do not have access to a gym or the only space to workout is in your room or outdoors, do not fret! There is a solution to that. You can access workout videos on your phone. My only go-to is Beachbody On Demand. With over 1,000 workouts to pick from that don’t require a lot of space, equipment or time you can definitely get in a nice sweat session. The trainers are experienced and easy to follow. And if you don’t have WIFI access you can download a few workouts instead!
4) Stick to Body Weight Exercise Routines
You can pretty much do these exercises anywhere. This is especially key if you are traveling and do not want to worry about equipment. Think squats, lunges, push- ups, jumping jacks, burpees, etc. If however you still want to ensure you get in some strength training pack some resistance bands or resistance loops. They come in various weights and are super easy to pack in your suitcase or a carry on bag. My top brand for bands and loops is Beachbody because the quality, durability and variety is top notch. The following are brands that also hold up well and can be found on Amazon. They include FitSimplify for resistance loops and Tribe for resistance bands.
4) Be an Early Bird
Get your workouts done earlier in the day. When you wait until later in the day you are more prone to skipping it. Getting it done earlier in the day kick starts your energy and removes the guilt you WILL feel later for not getting it done.
5) Find Accountability and Support
It is not always easy to just have the discipline or motivation to stick to your workouts. Having a friend, a coach, or a colleague to lean on keeps you accountable and can make all the difference. For example, I host a fit family morning rally Monday through Saturday where participants can hop on a Zoom call to check in and make sure they complete their workouts. Seeing other people on that call truly inspires you to keep showing up and putting forth the effort!
Staying committed, even in the summer, is possible! For more tips or information on anything mentioned above connect with me via my social media platforms or email me.
Summer is prime wedding time and with many brides opting for outdoor photos, here are some tips on what kinds of makeup works best for summer brides and things you should absolutely ask your artist before they beat your face.
First things first, you want to make sure you’re completely comfortable with your artist. Be sure to get a consultation if you can and ask him/her questions on their experience and even their vision for your wedding day. Make sure you listen to their responses and be sure to share your vision (bring pictures as examples) so that the two of you can come together and find the perfect look for your big day.
Suggestion: Book your hair stylist and makeup artist separately. I know that it’s likely your hair stylist dabbles in makeup or your makeup artist dabbles in hair, but it makes your day run much smoother with a staff of stylists doing hair while the artists do makeup. Think if it as a fun game of musical chairs!
Go ahead and ask what kind of makeup they use. This is not to bring out the brand snob in you, but you want to know what products will be used on your face. You’re paying for these services after all and if you’re going to dish out the big bucks (yes, it’s costly to have a professional do your makeup) then you want to be sure that you’re getting a professional who also uses professional products. The reason for this is because professional products are made to last, the quality is unmatched and will give a better result.
Check their website! You don’t want any surprises the day of your wedding and since you’re bound to get some inevitable surprises here and there anyway, your artists abilities shouldn’t be one of them. If they only have an Instagram or Facebook to refer you to then they clearly have not invested in themselves or their craft so why should you?
Go over a proposed timeline.
If you have a wedding planner then they will likely hammer down all the details but it’s a good idea to have a rough estimate on the time needed to do your makeup and those of your bridesmaids and still be done on time. Knowing how much time your artist needs, if they have other artists that will assist and how much time they typically need per face will also help avoid surprises. Remember, the more details you get the better.
Go over the contract with them and ask any questions you may have.
Don’t be shy on this point. This contract is made to not only cover the artist but also you. You want to be sure they have a backup should an emergency arise, and they can’t make it. You also want to go over the refund policy if something happens and the wedding must be put off for one reason or another. Be sure to leave the required retainer so that your day is booked and can’t be scheduled for another bride.
Summer makeup is an important nugget to read up on too!
It’s always best to educate yourself so that you’re not solely relying on your artist or other opinions. I’m a fan of airbrush makeup for all occasions but especially so for weddings. It’s water resistant, transfer resistant, lasts all day long and leaves a flawless finish. You can also try a tinted moisturizer for sheer coverage while still protecting and enhancing our skin. It Cosmetics has a full coverage tinted moisturizer that can cover a little or a lot and looks flawless all the way!
Look for eyeliner and mascara that promise waterproof and flake proof application and wear.
If you get emotional you want to trust that your makeup is exactly where you put it. If you opt for faux lashes, be sure the glue is waterproof.
Your blush can be anything you choose but a cream blush will give you that natural flushed look without looking heavy. It will melt right into the apples of your cheeks and last all night long.
Your pout is probably one of the easiest things to switch up last minute. Whether you’re looking for a sheer gloss, lipstick (that you’ll have to re-apply) a lip stain or a liquid lipstick you have so many options. Choose whichever feels most comfortable.
Celebrity Makeup Artist Monifa Mortis, whose clients include Queen Latifa, Common and Lisa Leslie to name a few weighs in with her thoughts on bridal beauty for Latinista Magazine. “You always want to select a look that you feel most confident and comfortable in. Start to collect a gallery of makeup looks from Pinterest or internet images to show your makeup artist. Focus on images that have models that have similar facial features and the same complexion as you to keep it relevant. Try to figure out which celebrity you look the most like and research their best red carpet looks. This will give you some inspiration on what might work best for you”
“Avoid trendy colors and don’t wait until the last minute to start experimenting with new shades that you’re not used to wearing”
*Monifa’s Favorite Lip Products: Tom Ford Ultra Shine gloss in Tawny Pink and Anastasia lip gloss in Toffee.
“Make sure you have a GlamKitti touch up kit to maintain your bridal look. What’s the point of all this meticulous planning if you can’t take some of the same makeup with you for touch-ups!?”
With all these pointers don’t forget to finish off your look with a setting spray that will lock your makeup in for the long haul. Keep your hands away from your face and you’re good to go. Summer heat won’t stand a chance.
Beach season is upon us! Most dogs would agree that running through the sand, chasing waves and fetching balls makes for the best day ever, however for pet owners, keeping your dog safe from potential hazards can be stressful if you’re not prepared. Before you beach it up with your dog this summer, check out these safety tips so that you’re ready for any obstacles along the way!
Pack the Essentials: When visiting the beach with your furry friend, you’ll need to pack the usual dog outing essentials like a collar, leash, treats, etc. But there are many other beach-specific items that you’ll want to throw in your beach bag to have on hand. Dogs can get sunburned just like people. Make sure you buy a pet-safe sunscreen and an umbrella for a shady place to rest. Portable food and water dishes, along with plenty of water to stay hydrated, is a must. An absorbent pet towel is great for those who love swimming and getting wet. To keep them busy in the water, pack a fun floating toy! In addition, our ocean-loving pups should always wear a life jacket, especially if they are not strong swimmers.
Some dogs get overly excited when out and about; especially when visiting a new territory like the beach. If you’re looking for a way to calm that summertime energy, CBD for dogs is the perfect option. Created by pharmacists, Buzzn is a new and innovative company that’s crafting premium CBD pet products, which focus on the natural compounds of phytocannabinoid-rich hemp oil that promote healing. Their pet product line contains no GMO’s, are farm bill compliant, and gluten free. Buzzn currently has two CBD infused products available for dogs that are easy to administer and ideal for when you go to the beach: Puppy Potion and Chill Bites. Both products help to improve conditions in pets such as anxiety, nervous licking, phobias/fears and travel stress. This is a super helpful product to have on hand in case your pet starts to feel any of these unpleasant feelings!
Respect the beach: Before you leave, it’s important to check with your local beaches to find out which ones are pet-friendly. Some beaches allow dogs year-round, while others only allow dogs off-season, and some not at all. Ask if they need to be leashed, can roam free and all other rules the beach requires. If you are going to a beach where your dog can be off-leash, make sure he or she is well-trained and under your voice control. Some people, especially children, are frightened of dogs. Be mindful of who your dog is approaching to avoid any problems.
In addition, no beach wants dog poop left behind. Picking up after your dog is a must! Let’s face it, trying to find your dog’s poop in the sand can be a challenge and a real buzz kill! A new company has created a product that will make sure you won’t have to touch or see poop again! Originally developed for the visually impaired and disabled, Poochy provides an easy, clean and simple solution for dealing with dog poop. Place Poochy on your dog’s tail and when he or she poops it will fall directly into the specially designed bag. No more touching, bending, scooping or scraping! This is a real game-changer for pet parents, especially while enjoying a day at the beach. Poochy makes this dreaded task simple, convenient and stress-free. It’s also a great way to ensure you are keeping the beautiful beaches clean and poop-free!
Sand-free is the way to be: Another important item to pack is a doggy first aid kit. An injury could happen at any time. There’s no doubt that stepping on a sharp shell, fishing hook or unexpected jellyfish sting can require some TLC. If your dog loves burrowing in the sand, you can understand firsthand how messy a trip to the beach can be. The salt water and sand can cover your pet head to toe, which isn’t always comfortable for them. Cleaning and drying your pup’s ears regularly is essential; especially after a trip to the beach. Dogs can develop ear infections a lot easier than humans.
Oxyfresh, the leading provider of safe, environmentally–friendly products for people and pets, offers a vet-recommended, Pet Ear Cleaner that is a great option for travel. This ear cleaner is a safe, gentle and effective solution for both dogs and cats. It’s the quickest and easiest way to soothe itchy, irritated ears and remove wax buildup, dirt and mites, leaving them with fresh and clean ears. Packing this product will be a wonderful way to make sure their ears feel their very best as they enjoy a sand-filled day at the beach!
Bring high reward items: A trip to the beach can be overstimulating for a dog and even the most well-behaved and trained pups can accidentally wander off. Always keep a close eye on them! Bringing a high reward treat is a great idea. Before entering the beach, share a goodie with them so they know you mean business! It’s best to pack high reward treats for your pup that are nutritious, wholesome and of course, delicious.

Find a new beach buddy: There are thousands of dogs in shelters all over the country that would want nothing more than to find their fur-ever home and become your beach buddy. If you’re looking for a new friend to travel with or just want to add a furry member to your pack, there’s a new online platform that will help you find your “paw-fect” match. The innovative pet adoption online platform, Adopets, streamlines the pet adoption process, saving shelters & rescues time, while giving pet parents an easy and fun adoption experience.
In just a few simple steps, potential adopters can create an account for free, where they can access over 280,000 registered animals from 11,000 organizations throughout the country. Users can search for animals in their desired location and view the pet’s description, which includes everything from gender, size, breed, age, as well as a short bio. Pets can be saved to a “favorites” file or the user can apply to adopt and make the adoption fee payment directly to the organization. The applicant will then go under review by the shelter or rescue. Imagine being able to find your new four-legged beach pal in such a simple, fun and convenient way. Adopets has made that possible! Currently, Adopets has animals available for adoption in every state in the U.S.

There is something about summer that makes some of us feel alive and new! Must be that summer D and I’m referring to the SUN! However, I’ll take a good D any time of year 🙂
Why is it that summer turns us into taxi cabs? Let me explain…
When you need to hail a taxi cab you know if it’s available instantly by the sign on its rooftop. As humans we often get so busy that we FORGET to turn our signals on. How is it that we all want love yet do not have our “I’m available” sign on? It’s like we’re embarrassed to admit we’re single and looking.
Well, it’s 2019 and we are literally built to love! It’s the equivalent of a strong drug when love hits our system. When I am in LOVE you can’t tell me SH*T! I have no issues sleeping, my house is on point, work flows, I mean there is nothing I can’t do.
How do you turn that signal on? Here are some simple tips…
Put your stupid phone away when in public. This will allow you to make eye contact with other humans and be approachable.
Smile. People underestimate how far a simple smile can take you.
Put effort into your look. You don’t need a glam team to look and feel your best so go ahead and add that “THING” that makes YOU feel your best.
Let people know you’re single and looking. Scary I know, but you don’t know who knows your soulmate!
Most importantly, love yourself AS IS. People think that when they lose 15 pounds life will get better. I’m here to tell you that life is NOW! Trust me when I say:
When the right person for you shows up, you can’t mess things up if you tried! They will love you as is because true love is actually found in our souls and honey, our souls are born ready. Be your true self!
At the end of the day our relationship status doesn’t define us. Being single doesn’t mean something is wrong with you.
Many people in relationships are a HOT MESS and are just there because they are too comfortable and scared to actually leave and find what they deserve.
SO, CONGRATULATIONS TO YOU!
Whatever brought you to this realization means you haven’t settled! Lulu is so proud of you.
Till next time,
Carol J. Castillo AKA Lulu
