Barbies New Dolls

If you haven’t heard by now Mattel the parent company of Barbie has released a new line of Barbie “Role Model” dolls. Ranging in different genres and industrys the line showcases what they call Sheroes both living and deceased. Although within the Latino community there has already been backlash on whether or not Mattel did a good job in portraying Mexican activist and artist Frida Khalo. While others in the community have looked forward to the day in which real life postitive female role models got the toy spotlight.

Chloe Kim- 17 year old Asian-American snowboarding champiagn. She is the youngest woman to win a gold medal at the 2018 Olympics.

Frida Kahlo- Through her art work and daily life Frida pushed the social norms on what was acceptable. She focused on topics like class, race, identity and gave them a spotlight in a time period when topics like these were not openly discaussed. She suffred a major accident as a young girl which left her in a body cast for the rest of her life.

Patty Jenkins- Director, producer and writer Patty Jenkins is most recently known for the box office smash hit Wonder Woman.  Her previous work like the 2003 hit Monster featuring Charlize Theron gained her some of her first nominations and awards. She not only creates mega hits on the big screen, but in the tv realm as well with AMC’s The Killing and TNT’s One Day She’ll Darken.

Nicola Adams Obe-  This Great Britain native is the country’s most successful female boxers. She has won two gold medals has been winning matches since the age of 13. She pursued her dreams of boxing even when she was struggling financially. Finding money in acting as an extra on tv, before women’s boxing got official funding in 2009.

Ibtihaj Muhammad- This New Jersey native is a member of the United States fencing team. Fencing sine the age of 13 she has gone on to be the first Muslim- American ever to win a medal during the Rio 2016 Olypmics. She has also created a clothing line focused on fashionable modesty and is the sports ambassador for the U.S. Department of States’s “Emporing Women and Girls Through Sport Initative”.
