Prepping your skin for warmer months is just as important as transitioning your closet from winter to spring or giving your pad a spring cleaning! You want to make sure the moment it’s time to shed your sweaters and leggings, your skin will be ready to take center stage with a radiant tone. Here are 5 DIY tips using common kitchen ingredients. This will help our Latinista’s ensure a perfect glow from head to toe when showing off in bikini’s and spring dresses.

1. First let’s start with a basic all-natural daily facial cleanser. Use about a teaspoon of castor oil, mixed into a ¼ cup of coconut oil or almond oil. Rub onto your face and massage. Rinse with warm water to wash away impurities. This is to be applied to a face that is already make-up free.

2. Next let’s focus on ridding the face of any deeper impurities and/or acne. Raw honey has been used for centuries as an anti-bacterial, anti-viral, and anti-fungal treatment for killing skin infections. It also reduces inflammation in the skin while hydrating it. Take a half a teaspoon of raw honey, rub it in your hands and spread on your face gently. Leave the mixture on for 10 minutes then rinse with warm water and pat dry.

3.Exfoliating is key for a smooth face and the body. Old dry skin cells are supposed to flake away naturally, but some are left behind needing a little help. If they’re not attended to, your complexion could look dull and rough. Without exfoliating clogged pores cause acne and other blemishes. Different exfoliants must be used for both the body and face.

For the face it’s important to use a gentle ingredient like oatmeal. Other ingredients like salt and sugar are too harsh for the face and can cause minute tears in the skin doing more damage than good. It’s a natural anti-inflammatory and is very moisturizing. Mix finely ground oatmeal with honey and/or kefir (you can also use yogurt or buttermilk). Scrub on your face in a circular motion, let sit for 15-30 minutes, rinse and wash as usual.

Keep the oatmeal out for your body scrub but mix it with brown sugar and olive oil to help rid skin of any bumpiness. For a more invigorating scrub, replace the oatmeal with coffee grounds. Combine a ½ cup of brown sugar and a ½ cup of oatmeal or coffee grounds with ¼ cup of olive oil. Combine ingredients and store the mixture in a dry place for up to 4 weeks. To use, wet skin first, and then apply in circular motions, gently exfoliating. Rinse. If you have extra sensitive skin, just leave out the sugar.

A couple of tips to aid in this process include using a body brush to increase the blood flow resulting in less cellulite. Also, be aware that if using this scrub in your shower the residue requires some clean up afterwards!

4. Speaking of cellulite, tightening up problem areas that harbor fat cells should be the next focus. Lemon essential oil has detoxifying properties that tighten and tone skin when used in a massage oil blend. It also helps reduce the old fat cells that form cellulite when they solidify and harden due to the surrounding skin losing its elasticity. Mix 25 drops of lemon oil with a carrier like jojoba or safflower oil. Massage a generous amount into troubled areas of the skin before bed. Don’t forget to lay a cloth down to protect your bedding.

5. Stay moisturized! The above routines for the face keep your face naturally moisturized so no additional moisturizing is necessary. Yet the body drinks moisture like water and could use an additional moisturizer. I suggest a cocoa butter-based lotion that the body will soak up without leaving you greasy. Use the below recipe and after a week you’ll notice a transformation in the skin leaving it baby soft with a glow.

  • Mix a 1/2 cup almond oil or jojoba oil (or any other liquid oil),
  • 1/4 cup coconut oil
  • 1/4 cup beeswax,
  • 1 teaspoon vitamin E oil (optional),
  • 2 tablespoon shea butter or cocoa butter (optional), and essential oils, vanilla extract or other natural extracts to suit your preference (optional).
  • Apply generously
